Have you ever wondered what the difference is between herbs and spices? Does it matter? These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they actually refer to different types of plants and parts of plants that are used to add flavor and aroma to dishes. There is a difference between them, and it will affect how you use them in your cooking. Here are some of the main differences between herbs and spices, as well as some tips on how to use and store them.

Herbs are usually the leaves of plants that are used fresh or dried. Some common herbs are basil, parsley, cilantro, mint, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage. Herbs tend to have a mild and delicate flavor that is best added at the end of cooking or as a garnish. Herbs can also be used to make sauces, dressings, marinades, teas, and infusions.

Spices are usually the seeds, roots, bark, buds, or flowers of plants that are used dried or ground. Some common spices are pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, cumin, paprika, and cloves. Spices tend to have a strong and pungent flavor that is best added at the beginning of cooking or as a rub. Spices can also be used to make curries, soups, stew, desserts, and beverages.

Both herbs and spices have many health benefits and can enhance the taste and appearance of your food. However, they also have different ways of storing and preserving them. Here are some general guidelines on how to store herbs and spices.

Fresh herbs should be washed and dried before storing them in the refrigerator. You can wrap a damp paper towel around them, place in a plastic bag, and put in the refrigerator. They can last a few days and up to week that way depending on the herb. Dried herbs, however, should be kept in an airtight container in a cool, dark, and dry place. They can last up to 2 years or longer depending on the type of spice. You should check the color and smell of your spice before using them. Discard them if they smell stale or are clumpy. You can also dehydrate your fresh herbs yourself, but that is topic for another day.

I hope this helped you to understand the difference between spices and herbs and how to use and store them. Don't forget to take chances and have fun while cooking.
